Q-Tip, Shaheed and Phife-Dawg…if you don’t know who they are, I don’t really want to know where you’ve been, because wherever it was, it wasn’t where the party was. Everything about their music just screams “New York”. Their music was at the heart of the “New Jack City” sound. If I have to explain that, you’re too young to understand what I mean. Ask Alexa to do a search for the movie. The “New Jack” sound is a uniquely New York musical art form from the 90’s that fused Hiphop with Jazz. It’s straight up Hiphop, but with horns, saxes, and a hard assed bass line under it (you know, Bass…as in that thing that looks like a giant violin). Weird, right? Not when you hear it. When they say “We’ve Got the Jazz”, they mean that shit. It’s the Jazz that created that hard, edgy East Coast sound that Snoop Dogg and the Cali rappers never quite got.

Many have been asked the question “Which do you like better, East Coast or West Coast Hiphop?” Like it’s some kind of a choice a real music lover would actually make. If you’re really into it, you don’t even dignify that question with an answer. That’s like expecting me to tell you which hand I’d like you to chop off, like I could actually choose which hand I’d rather lose. I need both my hands! The same is true for Hip-Hop. Everybody loves Cali’s style, but New York never disappoints. And the Tribe was a big part of that. Nominated four times for a Grammy but they never won (hmmm, sounds like a snub to me), I can’t imagine how they weren’t winners at least once. And now it’s too late. We lost Phife Dawg to my old nemesis Diabetes back in 2016…that horrible year we lost Prince, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, Carrie Fisher, and about 50 other celebs who left the planet. It would’ve been nice if they could’ve gotten at least one Grammy before he left us. They certainly deserved it. But Grammy’s are decided on the west coast, so…
