I know what you’re thinking…that’s a lot of desert. And everything is all the same color: Desert. Just look at the aerial shots. The buildings, the streets…everything is all the same color as the desert that surrounds it. You get pops of color here and there, but not much. Everything here is made from the desert. It always has been and probably always will be. Egypt has always looked this way. It’s the jewel of Africa. Egypt had great cities long before the rest of the world even knew what cities were. So it’s understandable that the old and the not so old don’t always look comfortable together. The great wealth and power that was once Egypt has long since passed away. You’ll see it as you walk and drive its tired old streets. But when you remember that those streets were there while Europeans were still drawing on cave walls, it kind of puts things into perspective. Long before the Arabs came, or the Romans, or the Greeks, these cities were here. Their great achievements and monuments are STILL STANDING, 3,000 years later. Will New York still be a thriving metropolis millennia from now? I really don’t think so.
Exploring Egypt
It’s not walkable in the traditional way. The beaches are rocky. The surf is rough. But don’t let that stop you from getting out of the car and exploring the beauty all around you. Take some time to enjoy McWay Falls, or just walk the beach. When you’re done, hop back in the car and head up to Carmel. If you’ve never been there and you’ve never heard of it, it’s nothing like you might imagine California to be. Completely unexpected. Check it out. It’s one of the coolest, trippiest places you’ll ever see.
Walk The Neighborhood
Move the mouse on top of the little gold man on the map. Hold down the left mouse button and you’ll see blue lines appear. Those lines are streets. Drag and drop the little man on top of the street you want and let go of the mouse button. The picture on the right will change to show you a view of that street along with the street name. Click the arrows on the street to “walk” around. Or you can double-click the street to walk if there’s an arrow under your cursor. Roll the middle mouse button to zoom in and out. That’s all there is to it. Now get out there and explore!
